2023 Mercedes AMG SL 43 Impressive 4 Cylinder Power

The 2023 Mercedes AMG SL 43 is a luxury convertible that shouldn’t be dismissed simply because it has a four cylinder engine. While its counterparts, the SL 55 and SL 63, may have more cylinders and power, the AMG SL 43 Impressive 4 Cylinder offers a more straightforward driving experience by shedding approximately 350 pounds of weight. It also has rear wheel drive instead of all wheel drive, and forgoes the complex active anti roll stabilization system found in the SL 63.

Mercedes’ F1 engine technology

The SL 43 boasts a longitudinally mounted 2.0 liter turbocharged four cylinder engine. What sets this engine apart is its electric exhaust gas turbocharger, which eliminates turbo lag by using an electric motor to spin the turbo before the exhaust gases kick in. This technology, derived from Mercedes’ F1 engine tech, provides immediate throttle response. The engine produces an impressive 375 horsepower and 354 pound feet of torque. However, some may question whether the SL, as a halo car, should offer less power than other models in the lineup.

Despite its smaller engine, the SL 43 can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.8 seconds and has a top speed of 170 mph. It is equipped with a nine speed multi clutch transmission, which provides quick shifts and a snappy driving experience. The car still offers ample power, as evidenced by its ability to briefly light up the rear tires during acceleration.

Rapid response and avoiding lag

The driving experience of the SL 43 is dominated by its four cylinder engine. The engine has a rough and loud idle, emphasizing its aggressiveness. At higher rev ranges, it delivers a sweet, racy note that encourages spirited driving. The electric turbocharger works effectively, providing rapid response and avoiding lag.

The SL 43’s lighter front end is noticeable, giving the car a more nimble feel. The passive dampers provide a good balance between composure and compliance. For those looking for a more advanced suspension, the car can be equipped with the AMG Ride Control adjustable and adaptive dampers.

One major complaint with the SL 43, as well as the overall SL range, is its weight. While the rear wheel drive improves the car’s handling, it still falls short of the AMG GT in terms of agility. Additionally, the car’s performance, while good, is not on par with competitors like the Jaguar F-Type R Convertible, Porsche 911 Cabriolet, or Chevrolet Corvette Convertible.

Head turning design

The base SL 43 offers a luxurious and technologically advanced interior and a head turning design. Overall, the SL 43 widens the appeal of the SL range by providing a more playful driving experience and a lower price point. It may not be the V8 model that enthusiasts desire, but the AMG SL 43 Impressive 4 Cylinder offers a compelling package for those seeking a unique luxury convertible.
