Second Generation Chevy Bolt Set to Debut in 2025

Chevrolet has announced that the current generation Bolt will be retired before the end of 2023, but the nameplate won’t be gone for long. General Motors CEO Mary Barra has confirmed that a second generation Chevy Bolt will be introduced in 2025, featuring newer battery technology.

Details about the technical specifications of the next-generation Bolt have not yet been released. The only information available is that the new Bolt will continue to be electric; it’s not going to receive the Corvette’s 6.2-liter V8 engine. While the current model uses older technology, its successor will be built around the Ultium technology that powers newer battery-powered models in GM’s lineup. Barra previously stated that the battery pack will utilize lithium-iron-phosphate cells, as reported by Automotive News, and that the model will be produced “at a lower cost and on a faster timeline.”

The 2023 Bolt is one of the most affordable EVs on the market. Producing its successor “at a lower cost” doesn’t necessarily mean it will have a lower price tag; GM may simply be looking to increase its profit margins.

The production location for the next-generation Bolt is still uncertain. The current model is manufactured at the Orion Assembly Plant in the Detroit area, but the factory will soon be reconfigured to produce electric trucks like the Silverado EV and the GMC Sierra EV.

More information about the second-generation Chevy Bolt is expected to be revealed in the coming months. Interestingly, the Bolt EUV will also be retired at the end of 2023, after only being available for two model years. It remains to be seen whether it will have a successor or if the lineup will be streamlined into a single model. While this is purely speculative, it is possible that Chevrolet will opt for the latter approach.
