Mercedes to Unveil AI-Powered Virtual Assistant at CES

Mercedes-Benz is set to unveil the next iteration of its MBUX infotainment system and MB.OS software platform at the 2024 Consumer Electronics Show. Attendees can expect to meet the luxury car maker’s new AI-powered virtual assistant, which aims to elevate the “driver-car relationship” with more human like interaction. In addition, Mercedes is teasing “class defining new features and collaborations” for in-car entertainment, boasting an “expressive new face” powered by Unity’s game engine graphics. While the specifics of this new look remain a mystery, a brief preview clip showcases stylized three pointed stars in generic animation.

AI assistants continues to advance:

The world of in-car AI assistants continues to advance. Earlier this year at CES, BMW introduced its Digital Emotional Experience, or DEE, an AI-powered “companion” integrated with the i Vision Dee concept car. Reports have also surfaced about General Motors’ exploration of OpenAI’s ChatGPT for a virtual assistant, along with its use of Google tools like Dialogflow for certain OnStar requests. Meanwhile, Volvo has integrated ChatGPT into its operations outside the car, partnering with Meta on a WhatsApp integration to assist shoppers in learning about the new EX30. This comes after Toyota introduced an AI assistant named Joya in the Sienna minivan two years ago. On top of that, TomTom and Microsoft have announced a collaboration on AI, showing the wide spread interest in this technology.

The perfect fit for cars:

Many industry observers believe AI-powered assistants could be the perfect fit for cars, as they have the potential to answer questions and carry out commands effectively, allowing drivers to remain focused on the road rather than on screens. Mercedes emphasized this point, stating, “Soon, participants who ask the Voice Assistant for details about their destination, to suggest a new dinner recipe, or to answer a complex question, will receive a more comprehensive answer – while keeping their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.”

The new AI assistant from Mercedes will make its debut on January 9 at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas alongside the Concept CLA battery electric sedan. Additionally, a camouflaged electric G-Class prototype will also be on display.

With Chat GPT becoming ever more popular we see AI as a useful option in car systems for customers.
