2024 Toyota Camry the Final Act of a Generation

The 2024 Toyota Camry remains unchanged, but a redesigned Camry is expected to be introduced in the next year.
The eighth generation of the Toyota Camry was a significant turning point for this beloved family sedan. It boasted improved looks and driving dynamics compared to its predecessors, offering a diverse range of models to suit different preferences. This successful redesign has kept the Camry relevant in the market for several years. However, it has been six years since the redesign, which typically signifies the end of a generation. We can anticipate a new generation of the Camry, likely based on an updated version of the current platform, to be released in the next model year.

In the meantime, let us focus on the fact that the 2024 Camry remains relevant today. It continues to excel in all areas, with spacious interiors, high-quality craftsmanship, powerful and efficient engines, optional all-wheel drive, and various styling and driving options across the lineup. If you’re looking for a sporty vibe, models with the SE or TRD designation are worth considering. If you prefer something more elegant or relaxed, the LE or XLE versions are better suited. We highly recommend choosing the hybrid variant, except for the V6-only TRD model. The hybrid offers more power and refinement than the base inline-four engine, along with superior fuel efficiency.

Interior and In-Car Technology:

The Camry’s interior design may be a bit excessive for some, but it is far from boring. The quality is above average, and even the entry-level LE model shares the same look and feel as the more upscale XLE model. There is ample storage space in the doors, center armrest, and the spacious two-tier smartphone bin. The standard 7-inch screen and the available 9-inch screen have the same user interface, so the main difference is the size rather than functionality. The interface design is a matter of personal preference, with some appreciating the simplicity and physical buttons, including the handy “Home” button for quickly navigating through screens. However, Toyota’s newer infotainment system found in their recent models lacks this functionality, which can be a downside. Nevertheless, it has a modern appearance and delivers quick responses, although its competitors have more superior interfaces.

Passenger and Cargo Space:

Compared to its rivals, the Camry offers generous interior space, with the exception of the Honda Accord, which has exceptionally roomy interiors. The lowered roofline in the latest generation may make some individuals feel a bit close to the ceiling, especially with a sunroof, but there is still sufficient headroom. The legroom is abundant, and even someone who is 6-foot-3 can comfortably sit behind another person without their knees touching the seatback.
The Camry also features a lower driver seating position compared to previous generations, providing a more connected and engaging driving experience. The trunk space measures at 15.1 cubic-feet, which is slightly less than the Accord and Sonata. However, it is still quite spacious, accommodating five roller bags with plenty of room to spare. The all-wheel drive and hybrid models have the same trunk space as the regular front-wheel drive versions, although the hybrid’s back seat is slightly elevated due to the battery placement. This difference is unlikely to be noticeable in everyday use.

Performance and Fuel Economy:

The 2024 Toyota Camry offers the widest range of powertrain options in the midsize sedan segment. The base engine is a 2.5-liter inline four that generates 203 hp, 206 hp in the XSE trim. It is paired with an eight speed auto transmission. Fuel economy in LE and SE trims achieve an impressive 11.9 km/l city, 16.5 l/km highway.
The optional 3.5-liter V6 engine is only available with front-wheel drive and produces a robust 301 hp. Unlike some turbocharged engines that require premium fuel, the Camry’s V6 runs on regular fuel. It still delivers respectable fuel efficiency, with ratings of 9.4 l/km 14 l/km highway.
The Camry Hybrid combines a four-cylinder engine with a pair of electric motors, producing a combined output of 208 hp. The Hybrid LE trim achieves impressive fuel efficiency ratings of 21.5 l/km city, 22.5 l/km highway.

Driving Experience:

The Toyota Camry has departed from its reputation as a mundane sedan and now offers a more engaging driving experience. It boasts sharper handling, composed dynamics, and responsive steering compared to previous generations. While the SE and XSE trims have slightly tighter handling, it is no longer necessary to choose these trims for a satisfying driving experience.
Although the Honda Accord still leads the segment in terms of driving dynamics, the Camry is not far behind. The Camry TRD trim specifically emphasizes sportiness, featuring track-tuned chassis components, a strengthened structure, and enhanced steering for a sport sedan-like handling experience. It also comes with the powerful V6 engine, which is optional on other Camry trims. However, the majority of buyers opt for the base four-cylinder engine, which offers class-leading power. While it may not match the low-end torque of turbocharged engines and lacks refinement, it is accompanied by a responsive eight-speed auto transmission that outperforms most of its rivals’ CVTs.
The driving dynamics of the Camry AWD, equipped with the base four-cylinder engine, remain similar to the front-wheel drive models. Lastly, the Camry Hybrid is our top pick for its blend of power and efficiency. The electric motor provides low-end power, addressing the base engine’s lack thereof, while also improving overall smoothness. The hybrid version also benefits from a lower center of gravity due to the battery placement beneath the back seat, resulting in improved cornering dynamics. However, aggressive acceleration may still produce some engine noise, which is less prevalent in the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid.

Pricing and Trim Levels:

Toyota offers a variety of trims, allowing buyers to find one that suits their needs and preferences. The pricing for the 2024 Camry starts at a competitive point, and with the wide range of available trims, there is a Camry model for every budget. The trim levels include the base LE, sporty SE, luxurious XLE, performance-oriented XSE, and the track-inspired TRD. Additionally, the Camry Hybrid is available in LE, SE, and XLE trims. Buyers can select additional packages and options to further customize their Camry to their liking.

Crash Ratings and Safety Features:

The 2024 Toyota Camry has a strong reputation for safety, consistently receiving top ratings from (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). It comes equipped with an array of standard safety features, including a comprehensive suite of driver-assistance technologies. These features enhance driver awareness, mitigate the risk of collisions, and provide peace of mind on the road.

Conclusion:

it’s important to note that the Camry holds its value better than these competitors. Additionally, there’s something exciting on the horizon with the upcoming ninth generation of the Camry. Although it may not undergo a radical overhaul like the previous redesign, it doesn’t necessarily need to.
