2024 Toyota RAV4 Review: Highlights Hybrid Capabilities

The 2024 Toyota RAV4 marks the sixth year since its complete redesign in 2019. While the redesign injected character and capability into a previously dull product, the competition has since caught up. The Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tucson, Nissan Rogue, and especially the Honda CR-V have all been redesigned and have become stronger competitors in the compact SUV segment.

Despite this, we still recommend the 2024 RAV4 due to its unmatched variety of trim levels, exceptional fuel economy, and long-term ownership prospects. The hybrid models, including the Prime plug-in hybrid, are particularly appealing for their superior fuel economy and performance. Additionally, the introduction of the Woodland Edition last year provides a hybrid option for those looking for a more rugged SUV experience.

For those seeking a sportier vibe, the SE and XSE hybrid models are the best options for on-road driving. Overall, the RAV4 offers something for everyone and maintains a solid foundation of practicality.

Interior and Technology

The RAV4’s materials and build quality are excellent, but they don’t achieve the near-luxury feel of its rivals’ top trim levels. The lack of genuine leather and the use of SofTex vinyl as a substitute may be problematic for buyers looking for a higher-end experience. However, colorful trim pieces differentiate the various models and the Toyota Venza and Lexus NX provide more premium options for those seeking a luxurious vibe.

In terms of in-car storage, the RAV4 excels with large and versatile cupholders, easily accessible phone storage, an under-armrest bin, and unique shelves in the dash. The cargo area features a double-sided floor and a hidden cargo cover, providing practical solutions for storage. The RAV4 also offers an all-digital instrument panel and an improved touchscreen interface that looks modern and reacts quickly. However, the lack of physical menu buttons and the transition between Toyota’s controls and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto interfaces can be frustrating.

The RAV4 offers ample passenger space and is suitable for full-sized adults and rear-facing child seats. While it may not be class-leading in terms of cargo space, it remains one of the most practical small SUVs. It offers more cargo space than most compact crossovers, but falls behind the Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tucson in this area. However, the RAV4 Hybrid includes a spare tire, unlike its competitors.

In terms of fuel economy and performance, the standard RAV4 comes with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 203 hp. While acceleration is above average, it doesn’t wow, and the 0-60 mph time is estimated at 8.1 seconds. The RAV4 offers front-wheel drive as standard, with optional all-wheel-drive systems available. Fuel economy estimates for 2024 were not available at the time of writing, but the 2023 estimates suggest decent fuel efficiency across the board.

Still some Areas for Improvement

However, there are areas where the 2024 Toyota RAV4 falls behind its competitors. The powertrains, both gas-only and hybrid, are louder and less refined. Toyota’s infotainment system can be a love-it-or-hate-it experience. The cabin design and materials are not as premium as its rivals. And while these may seem like minor issues, they contribute to the tougher decision between the RAV4 and its newer, more impressive competitors.

Pros: A wide range of trim levels, excellent fuel economy, available plug-in hybrid option, and strong reliability and resale value.

Cons: Powertrains are not as refined, tech interface can be frustrating, and it lacks the luxury of its rivals.

Overall, the 2024 Toyota RAV4 offers a wide range of trim levels, exceptional fuel economy, and strong reliability and resale value. While it may have some shortcomings compared to its newer competitors, it remains a practical and versatile compact SUV that will still appeal to many buyers. Whether you choose one of the hybrid models for their fuel efficiency or the woodsy charm of the Woodland Edition, the RAV4 continues to offer something for everyone.

Toyota Cambodia unfortunately, do not list the RAV4 as a model offered in Cambodia. However there are many other great models to choose from.
