Review: The 2023 BMW i4 eDrive35 – Future-Proofing

The 2023 BMW i4 eDrive35 captures the essence of its predecessors while embracing a new era of electric vehicles. It is clear that this car was developed by the same team responsible for creating some of the finest driver’s cars in the world. However, the i4 offers a different driving experience, one that doesn’t rely on a traditional engine sound to provide enjoyment.

In the past, a car’s soundtrack played a significant role in the overall driving experience. Without it, a car could feel like a soulless appliance. BMW has successfully avoided this pitfall with the i4. Even without the roar of an engine, the i4 still delivers an engaging and thrilling driving experience, especially on a well designed road. It feels as though an engine isn’t necessary in this electric application.

The controversial enlarged kidney grilles, which were introduced with the G80, have gradually become more widely accepted. BMW has made an effort to integrate this design language into the styling of the i4. The lines of the i4 are less pronounced than the sportier M3, giving it a more conventional look. While there are still signature BMW design touches, the i4 can easily blend in with other vehicles on the road if one prefers a more incognito appearance. The exterior trims can be changed to black instead of the prominent blue, further enhancing its conventional appearance.

Surprising Spaciousness Interior:

Inside the cabin, the i4 offers surprising spaciousness despite its sleek silhouette and under floor battery pack. Finding a comfortable driving position is easy, and there is ample head and knee room for passengers. Despite being deemed a “barebones” BMW, the eDrive35 is well equipped. Both front seats are motorized, and the car features a heads-up display and BMW’s OS8 system. This is more visually appealing and enhances the vehicle’s overall functionality. The build quality is excellent, with no signs of inferior materials throughout the interior. Additionally, sustainability has been taken into account, with the standard inclusion of vegan SensaTec leather.

While there’s no denying that an internal combustion engine adds to the excitement of driving, the i4 proves that an electric vehicle can be just as engaging. The lack of an engine doesn’t diminish the enjoyment of driving the i4. The chassis is well sorted, and the rear-mounted electric motor delivers smooth and consistent power at any speed. The i4 feels more playful and nimble than other vehicles on the same platform, thanks to its lower traction and absence of heavy electronic systems in the front.

When is an EV not an EV:

One of the highest accolades that can be given to an electric vehicle is the ability to forget that it is electric. The i4 excels in this regard. It is a capable electric vehicle that requires minimal adaptation if coming from a traditional internal combustion engine car. The regenerative braking feels intuitive, and the i4 has an impressive range in the high 400s.

While there are some minor drawbacks, such as slightly stiffer ride compared to petrol powered counterparts. These are ok in the grand scheme of things. The trade off for a slightly less comfortable ride is well worth it considering the overall performance and quality of the i4. The polarizing looks have become less of a concern over time, and the car’s design has aged well.

In conclusion, if you’re still on the fence about electric vehicles, the 2023 BMW i4 eDrive35 is a solid and future proof choice that you won’t regret buying. It captures the essence of BMW’s heritage while embracing the latest advancements in electric vehicle technology. With its engaging driving experience, comfortable interior, and sleek design, the i4 is a testament to BMW’s commitment to creating exceptional vehicles in the electric era.

No news from BMW Cambodia if they will import the i4. We do see i7 and iX so lets see how many saloons they bring.
