Review: 2024 Hyundai Kona brings Electric Models and Improved Features

The 2024 Hyundai Kona marks a significant evolution in the subcompact crossover segment. Although it has been reduced to just two models (as the Kona N is discontinued), the new Hyundai Kona brings electric models and improved features, offers more space, advanced technology, and a wider range of electric powertrain options.

Despite these changes, the Kona retains the attributes that made the first generation popular. It remains enjoyable to drive, especially in the higher performance models, and it continues to feature practical and well thought out technology. While it may be small, its position in Hyundai’s lineup makes it an attractive and affordable option.

The Kona Electric returns with an updated lineup that includes a choice between an ultimate range option and a smaller, more cost effective battery. Unfortunately, the removal of federal tax credits means that the Kona Electric’s price is no longer as competitive as before. However, with other affordable electric vehicle options temporarily on hold (such as the Chevrolet Bolt EUV), the Kona is well positioned to make a splash in the market.

Interior & Technology:

The Kona’s interior is impressive for its price point and segment. The 2024 redesign brings a fresh look to the front cabin, particularly in the Limited and N-Line trims. These trims also feature a column-mounted gear selector, which creates additional space between the seats. The Kona borrows the Palisade’s multi-function center console, which includes collapsible cupholders that can be stowed away to accommodate larger items.

In terms of technology and infotainment, the Kona offers a 12.3-inch center screen for the SE and SEL trims, paired with a smaller 4.2-inch color cluster. These models come equipped with wireless smartphone integration (Apple or Android) as a standard feature. The Limited and N-Line trims include a navigation-equipped system with Bose audio and wired Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. However, wireless capability is not yet available for these higher-end models. Hyundai will offer an over the air update to enable wireless connectivity by the end of 2024. The Kona is equipped with USB C charging ports in the front and rear, and it can be equipped with a wireless device charger for smartphones and small tablets.

Passenger & Cargo Space:

The Kona is classified as a subcompact SUV, meaning it is a small vehicle. If you anticipate using the back seat and cargo area frequently, it’s important to consider this limitation. However, the 2024 redesign has significantly increased the Kona’s size and functionality. The previous model lagged behind its competitors in terms of headroom, legroom, and cargo space. The additional three inches of front headroom and rear legroom introduced in the redesign bring the Kona in line with its rivals such as the Honda HR-V, Toyota Corolla Cross, and Kia Seltos.

The rear seat now offers competitive space within the subcompact class. Cargo space has also been improved, with an additional 6.3 cubic feet of storage behind the rear bench. The total cargo capacity with the seats up is now 25.5 cubic feet, surpassing the HR-V, Crosstrek, and Buick Envista. However, it falls slightly behind the Corolla Cross, Seltos, and Volkswagen Taos.

Performance & Fuel Economy:

The 2024 Kona offers a range of powertrain options, resulting in a somewhat complex lineup. This includes both gasoline engines and electric drivetrains, providing a balance between efficiency and performance.
The base engine is a 2.0 liter four cylinder with 147 hp. It is paired with a continuously variable transmission and is available with front-wheel drive or all wheel drive.
The front wheel drive model achieves an EPA-estimated fuel economy rating of 12 l/km city, 14.8 l/km highway. The N-Line and Limited trims offer a more powerful 1.6 liter turbo four cylinder engine with 190 hp.
This engine is paired with an eight speed auto transmission and is available with both front wheel drive and all wheel drive. The front wheel drive models achieve an estimated 11 l/km city, 13.6 l/km highway.

The Hyundai Kona brings electric models and is available in two versions. The Electric SE features a 133 hp motor paired with a 48.6 kWh battery, providing a range of 315 kms. Electric SEL and Limited models feature a 201 hp motor with a 64.8 kWh battery, offering a range of 415 kms. Charging times vary, the smaller battery taking 5 hours on a level II home setup and just over 6 hours for the larger battery. Both batteries can be charged from 10% to 80% on a DC fast charger in 43 minutes.

Driving Experience:

The driving experience of the Kona largely depends on the chosen powertrain. Models with front wheel drive feature a torsion beam suspension, while those with all wheel drive have an independent multilink setup at the rear.
For a better driving experience, opting for all wheel drive is recommended. In general, the Kona offers an enjoyable driving experience with responsive steering and good body control. Although it may not be as sporty as the previous generation, it remains nimble and handles well. The transition from the old dual clutch transmission to the new eight speed auto is seamless, providing ample power when needed. The Kona Electric stands out for its quiet cabin, as there is no gasoline engine to mask outside noise. Despite a reduction in torque compared to the previous model, the Kona Electric still delivers strong performance. Overall, the Kona offers a well rounded and refined driving experience.

Pricing & Trim Levels:

The 2024 Kona comes with various trim levels to cater to different budgets and preferences. The SE and SEL trims are equipped with the base 2.0 liter engine, and the Limited and N-Line trims feature the more powerful 1.6 liter turbo engine. The Kona Electric is available in three trims: SE, SEL, and Limited. Pricing ranges from an affordable starting point for the base SE model to a higher price for the top of the line Limited.

What’s new for 2024?

The 2024 Kona has undergone a redesign, resulting in increased cargo space and a roomier rear seat. While the standard gasoline engines remain largely unchanged, the high performance N-Line model has been discontinued. However, there is a possibility of its return in the future.
The Kona Electric will be reintroduced in late 2023 with two options for battery electric powertrains. The interior has also been revamped, featuring new technology and an updated design. The 12.3 inch infotainment system supports over the air updates and comes with USB-C ports in the front and rear. Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support will be added through an over the air update in 2024.

Pros: The 2024 Hyundai Kona offers great technology, a reasonably fun driving experience, and the option for a turbo engine upgrade and electric model. The new generation also provides more space compared to its predecessor.

Cons: Unfortunately, the upgraded system does not include wireless smartphone connection, and the Kona N performance model is currently unavailable.

In conclusion:

The 2024 Hyundai Kona brings electric models and offers an impressive range of features and improvements compared to its predecessor. With its updated design, increased interior space, advanced technology, and diverse powertrain options, it is a strong contender in the subcompact crossover segment. Although there are some drawbacks, such as the lack of wireless smartphone connection, the overall value and driving experience of the 2024 Kona make it a compelling choice for buyers in this segment.
