Toyota EPU: An Electric Pickup with a Clean and Simplistic Design

Electric pickup trucks have become increasingly common, but they all seem to be large. Even the smallest option currently available, the Rivian R1T, is not exactly compact, and it is also quite expensive. This is why we are especially intrigued by the potential production of the Toyota EPU: An Electric Pickup

Recently unveiled at the Tokyo Show, the Toyota EPU is a modest sized electric truck that boasts a clean and simplistic design. The vehicle widens towards the bottom, giving it a sturdy appearance. The contrast roof and upswept rear windows add visual appeal. Interestingly, the EPU appears ready for production with minimal changes.

One Size Does Not Fit All:

One notable feature of the EPU is its relatively small size. With a length of 199.6 inches, it is comparable to a Ford Maverick. However, it is slightly lower in height and a bit wider, making the measurements comparable between the two vehicles. It is worth noting that the EPU has a unibody design and quad cab layout, which may explain the increased space between the axles, potentially resulting in a more spacious interior.

Considering the electric nature of the EPU, Toyota likely managed to increase the wheelbase. While specific details were not provided, electric powertrains offer greater flexibility in vehicle layout. In terms of versatility, the EPU showcases some impressive features. The tailgate can fold in half when lowered, extending the bed and providing a backstop to prevent items from falling out. Toyota also hinted at a mid-gate function, similar to the Chevy Silverado EV, although it is unclear if the rear window can be fully removed for a pass through.

The Design Inside:

The interior of the EPU adopts a utilitarian design. Most of the dashboard serves as a divided shelf, allowing for storage of various items. The blocky shapes and combination of materials contribute to its distinctive aesthetic. The inclusion of a steering yoke suggests the possible fitment of the promising “Steer by Wire” system found in the Lexus RZ. The shifter and other drive buttons are positioned between two floating screens.

Overall, Toyota have managed to produce a mid-sized Pickup that fits neatly into their line up under all the current competition. This will give it a distinct advantage in the sales volumes for the Toyota EPU: An Electric Pickup
