Volkswagen has shared a cryptic video on social media featuring a rabbit, raising speculation about the return of an upcoming rabbit model, the rabbit name previously used for the Golf in North America.
The video caption read, “The internet is full of 🐈🐈🐈. Everyone likes cats. We like them, too. But today, we want to honor the rabbit – for good reason. Stay tuned! #welovetherabbit #OneFuture #Volkswagen #VW.”

In 1975, when Volkswagen introduced the Mk1 Golf, it was named as the Rabbit. This was part of Volkswagen’s tradition of naming its models after winds, such as Passat, Scirocco, and Golf, which means Gulf Winds in German.
However, the name Golf was not an ideal fit for a small economy hatchback in English-speaking markets, so Rabbit was chosen as a more suitable alternative.
When the Mk2 Golf was launched in 1985, the Golf name was also used for the U.S. market. The Rabbit name returned briefly when the Mk5 was introduced in North America in 2006, with badges depicting a hopping rabbit.
At that time, Volkswagen stated, “The reintroduction of the Rabbit represents Volkswagen’s commitment to this market and a nod to the passionate enthusiasts with the Rabbit name.”
However, the name switched back to Golf until the appearance of the Golf Rabbit Edition in 2019.
The post includes the text “D-7” in the corner, suggesting a countdown. Subsequent posts by Volkswagen on social media feature a tool-filled garage with “D-6” and a jar of honey with “D-5.” Speculation is that there will be a reveal at the Munich Motor Show on September 4.
Considering Volkswagen already offers mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid Golf’s, this video could be hinting at an all-electric Golf.
However, in Germany the name wasn’t used so it would be unusual for the upcoming model to be named Rabbit.
It’s possible that the rabbit is simply a diversion. Only time will tell.
