Apple Applies For A Patent For An Augmented Reality Windscreen

Apple is exploring the concept of an augmented reality windscreen (AR) display system for vehicles, according to a recent filing with the U.S. Patent Office, you can also read more here from Google.

The proposed system would project information onto the windshield, providing real-time data about the environment and objects in the distance, as well as information about the vehicle itself. This advanced technology would utilize various sensors, including cameras, infrared cameras, and scanning devices, to create a three-dimensional representation of the car’s surroundings. The patent also mentions the use of geographical positioning and radar devices, which would be handy for maps.

Unlike traditional AR overlays, the system described in the patent would integrate the projected elements seamlessly into a large glass area, creating a complex, multi-dimensional model of the outside world.

In addition to the augmented reality windscreen display system, the patent filing also mentioned Apple’s plans for a FaceTime application that would allow occupants of a vehicle to communicate with each other or with occupants of another vehicle remotely. This feature would further enhance the connectivity and user experience within the vehicle.

While some aspects of the patent application are not entirely new, as Apple had previously filed for similar system implementations in 2018, the proposed AR display system represents a significant advancement in in-vehicle technology. In its CarPlay update last year, Apple introduced virtual gauges and widgets, as well as access to native car information such as engine RPM and temperature controls.

With the updates in technology to the auto industry coming thick and fast, this application from Apple could see maps view and spotify in a whole new light, but we have to ask ourselves with phones being a distraction how will it get approval from the road traffic associations, we are yet to see but the prospects are exciting.
