BMW Vision Neue Klasse: Stunning Design and EV Improvements

Introducing the BMW Vision Neue Klasse, a revolutionary concept sedan that gives us a glimpse into the future of BMW design. According to BMW, the Neue Klasse represents a simplification of their traditional design elements, but to us, it looks like a complete reinvention of the brand’s design language with a touch of nostalgia. If you’re familiar with BMW’s latest concept vehicles, you’ll notice similarities to the i Vision Dee. In fact, the Neue Klasse appears to be an evolution of that vehicle.

Let’s delve into some of the unique features of the Neue Klasse. One standout is the newly designed kidney grille, which is mostly comprised of light instead of an actual grille. Unlike other BMW models that feature a vertical orientation, the grille on the Neue Klasse stretches horizontally across the front end. It also seamlessly integrates all the necessary driver assist sensors for a cleaner look. As you approach the vehicle, the grille displays a captivating three-dimensional lighting effect that serves as a form of communication with the driver.

The Neue Klasse also incorporates E Ink elements in the lower side windows, which highlight where the driver should place their hand to open the door. By simply touching the correct spot, the doors automatically pop open. Another fascinating feature is the taillight lighting, consisting of 3D-printed light elements that create an illusion of depth. It’s a truly unique and facinating design.

The Neue Klasse pays homage to BMWs of the past with its steeply forward-slanting shark nose front-end, muscular wheel arches, and retracted greenhouse. However, its minimalist slab-sided body and overall design language differ significantly from BMW’s current models on the road. While BMW doesn’t explicitly state it, we believe this design may be a preview of a future electric 3 Series product given the size of the Neue Klasse.

BMW has also made significant advancements in the electric vehicle (EV) space with the introduction of the Neue Klasse platform. They claim that the Neue Klasse EVs will surpass their current lineup in various aspects. The replaceable battery cells are now round instead of prismatic, resulting in a 20% increase in energy density. Charging speed has also improved by 30%, and overall vehicle driving efficiency is enhanced by up to 25% thanks to the latest generation of electric motors, a new heat pump, and optimized cooling. In winter conditions, the efficiency improvement reaches 40% due to the heat pump. All these improvements are projected to increase the driving range of vehicles like the BMW i4 by approximately 30%. Currently, the best-rated i4 model offers a range of 307 miles per EPA testing, and with the new technology, this range could potentially increase to around 400 miles.

Though it may not surpass competitors like Lucid at this time, the Neue Klasse’s anticipated improvements in range and charging speed are noteworthy. BMW aims to increase the maximum charging rate to 260 kW, surpassing Tesla’s vehicles and approaching the charge speed of more luxurious models like the Porsche Taycan and Audi E-Tron GT.

The interior of the Neue Klasse is likely to be a point of both adoration and controversy. The seats feature yellowish corduroy upholstery, as BMW considers incorporating more non-leather materials in their future interiors. The mustard-like fabric is complemented by an off-white color scheme on the floor, center console, doors, and other areas. The interior evokes the feeling of a tastefully-designed living room, with an abundance of glass and a low beltline that allows ample light to fill the cabin. The real star of the show, however, is the innovative technology on display.

The Neue Klasse introduces the next generation of BMW iDrive, an enhanced version of the BMW Panoramic Vision display, and the new iDrive “controller.” The central screen has undergone a redesign, featuring a new shape and positioned as the standalone centerpiece of the dashboard. BMW is still considering the inclusion of a volume knob. The iDrive rotary knob has been completely replaced by a touchscreen interface, accompanied by new software that reimagines the structure and operation of iDrive. Integrated with the main display is the impressive full-width Panoramic Vision, which will be available in Neue Klasse vehicles. This advanced display projects information across the entire lower portion of the windshield, ensuring it is within the driver’s and passenger’s line of sight. Unlike many head-up displays, BMW’s Panoramic Vision is compatible with polarized sunglasses. The touch display allows the projection of navigation directions, media controls, and more onto the Panoramic Display. Additionally, control can be managed through a new touch controller on the steering wheel or via the central touchscreen. We eagerly await the opportunity to experience this new technology in a production model.

If you happen to be in Germany, you can catch a glimpse of the BMW Vision Neue Klasse at the Munich Motor Show. More importantly, expect to see many of its features, technology, and design elements incorporated into future BMW EVs. BMW plans to commence production of the Neue Klasse in 2025, so the future is not too far away.
