2024 Dual-Motor Polestar 2: What Lies Beneath the Surface

Polestar has made significant changes to its 2 model during a midcycle refresh, setting it apart from its predecessor. The 2024 Polestar 2 boasts new drive wheels, increased power and range, and a unique front grille. These improvements have elevated the already excellent electric vehicle (EV) to a higher level, positioning it favorably against its competition.

The 2024 Polestar 2 has undergone several notable updates. Visually, there haven’t been many changes, with only a few key features distinguishing it from older models. One noticeable difference is the wheel design, with three new rim options available depending on personal preference. The most significant alteration, however, is the introduction of the “SmartZone” grille. This unique feature consists of an array of sensors and radars that enhance safety and assist in driving systems. Polestar implemented this grille to align the 2 with their future fleet.

What lies Beneath the Surface:

The real advancements are found beneath the surface of the car, particularly in the case of the single-motor Polestar 2. The company has introduced an 82 kWh battery that charges at 205 kW, 20% faster than before, extending the EPA-estimated range to 320 miles. This range increase by 50 miles is a noteworthy improvement over the older model.

Despite the enhanced range, the power output has not been compromised. In fact, it has significantly increased. The all-new rear-mounted motor generates 299 horsepower and 361 lb-ft of torque, an improvement of 68 hp and 118 lb-ft of torque compared to its predecessor. This upgrade has resulted in a reduced 0-60 time from 7 seconds to 5.9 seconds. Additionally, the base 2 is now rear-wheel drive, making it more enjoyable from a driving dynamics perspective.

The dual-motor Polestar 2, the top-tier option, has also experienced significant upgrades. It now features two more powerful motors, a new battery, inverters, and a more rear-biased power delivery. The battery capacity remains the same at 78 kWh, as does the charging capability at 155 kW. However, these enhancements result in an increased range of 276 miles, up by 16 miles.

Improvements in Performance:

In its standard form, the dual-motor Polestar 2 outputs 421 horsepower and 546 lb-ft of torque, improvements of 13 horsepower and 59 lb-ft of torque over the previous model. This upgrade enables a faster 0-60 time of 4.3 seconds, while the Performance Pack further raises the power to 455 horsepower. Optional packages, such as the Pilot Pack and Plus Pack, offer additional features and amenities to enhance the driving experience.

Driving the 2024 The dual-motor Polestar 2 is a thrilling experience, with remarkable acceleration that matches the expectations of electric vehicles. The dual-motor car, in particular, feels incredibly powerful, meeting its 455 horsepower and 546 lb-ft of torque specifications. It also offers exceptional passing abilities. The single-motor version is slightly less quick, but with 299 horsepower and a sub-6-second 0-60 time, it still performs admirably.

Engaging sport mode introduces some natural rotation from the back end during cornering, providing an exciting driving experience. The rear-wheel-drive configuration of the base 2 contributes to its improved dynamics and handling. Despite these improvements, the Polestar 2’s steering remains consistent with electric cars, somewhat vague but adjustable. The car’s one-pedal driving system is well-tuned, offering different levels of regenerative braking, while both the single and dual motor versions provide a smooth and comfortable ride.

Inside the 2024 Polestar 2:

You’ll find a well-designed cabin with a range of features. The driver assist suite works effectively, although closer follow-distance during adaptive cruise control would be appreciated. The front suspension absorbs road imperfections, ensuring a serene driving experience, but the rear suspension could use improvement in terms of comfort and handling, as it transmits more road noise to the cabin.

In summary, the 2024 Polestar 2 incorporates several significant upgrades that elevate its performance and range. The EV now offers enhanced power and improved driving dynamics, making it a competitive option in the market.
