Exploring the 2024 Ford F-150’s 3 Way Pro Access Tailgate

Ford has introduced its own version of a fancy tailgate called the Pro Access Tailgate on the 2024 Ford F-150. This tailgate swings out like a single barn door, unlike the Ram Multifunction Split Tailgate which splits into two sections.

The purpose of a sideways-swinging tailgate is to provide easier loading and unloading of awkward items by allowing users to walk right up to the edge of the bed without leaning across a flat tailgate.

Ford’s version of the swing-out tailgate leaves a narrower opening than others because the portions of the gate on the left and right remain stationary when the middle section swings open. Nevertheless, for wider loads, the tailgate can still be dropped down in the traditional manner.

The 3 way Pro Access Tailgate is accompanied by a new design for the ladder step and extendable grab handle. In this new design, a footstep can be pulled out from under the bumper, enabling users to step onto it and then onto the extended bumper section, which acts as a second step before entering the bed.

Ford has also integrated a hand-hold into the stationary part of the tailgate for added support. The experience is somewhat similar to the old step, but users will need to try it themselves to determine which solution works best for their needs.

One unique feature of the Pro Access Tailgate

One unique feature of the Pro Access Tailgate is its consideration for trailering purposes. It has multiple detents, with the first one positioned at 37 degrees. This allows users to open the tailgate to the maximum without hitting it against the hitch and trailer directly behind the truck.

Previously, when a trailer was attached, users would have to climb in from the side or reach over the bed sides to access their belongings. With the 3 Way Pro Access Tailgate, they can simply open it to the first detent and easily climb in and out of the bed. Additionally, Ford has relocated all of the trailering cable ports to the other side of the truck to prevent users from tripping over them while entering or exiting.

Despite its unique design, Ford assures that the Pro Access Tailgate offers the same weight capacities and strength as the standard drop-down tailgate. The 3 way Pro Access Tailgate will be mandatory in the new Platinum Plus trim for 2024 and optional for all other trims from XLT and above. Pricing details have not been disclosed, but it is expected to come with an additional charge.
