A Closer Look at the 2024 Honda CR-V Superior Experience

The Honda CR-V has been one of the best selling SUV’s in Cambodia for many years. with 2024 approaching a new updated model has been announced.
The 2024 Honda CR-V offers a superior experience, but remains largely unchanged from its previous model year. However, Honda introduced a new Sport-L trim level to bridge the gap in price and equipment between the hybrid-only Sport and Sport Touring trims.

The hybrid version of the CR-V is more powerful and efficient compared to the 1.5-liter turbo inline-four engine available in the LX, EX, and EX-L trims. Its simulated shifts make the driving experience feel more natural, distinguishing it from the 1.5-liter engine’s shiftless continuously variable transmission (CVT).
Like its predecessors, the 2024 CR-V ticks all the boxes expected from a sensible family SUV: spacious cabin, strong safety features, fuel efficiency, well-equipped, well-built, and likely to be reliable with good resale value. The updated design and improved driving dynamics give it an extra edge, placing it above its impressive competitors such as the Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tucson, Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-50, and Nissan Rogue.

Interior & Technology:

The CR-V’s interior combines a clean and sophisticated aesthetic with functional design elements. Although some may prefer the flashier cabins of rival models, the CR-V’s classic Honda styling, including metal honeycomb vents, piano black accents, and chrome knobs, exudes a timeless elegance. Moreover, the interior is well-crafted, featuring ample storage space, cupholders, and user-friendly switchgear. The low dash and excellent visibility create a sense of spaciousness, while the high-quality materials and responsive controls enhance the overall driving experience. The CR-V offers a choice of two infotainment systems: a standard 7-inch touchscreen with volume and tuning knobs, and a larger 9-inch touchscreen with configurable touch-operated menu shortcut buttons available on higher trims. While the base system may appear rudimentary, the inclusion of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility compensates for its simple appearance. However, the larger touchscreen system found in higher trims offers more advanced features and a modern look.

Passenger & Cargo Space:

Compared to its previous generation, the 2024 CR-V is slightly larger but retains its reputation as one of the most spacious and passenger-friendly compact SUVs on the market. The rear seats offer generous legroom and reclining capability, ensuring comfort for passengers of all sizes. Front seats are highly adjustable and comfortable, accommodating drivers of varying heights and preferences.
Cargo space varies depending on the trim level, with the EX and EX-L trims featuring a dual-level cargo floor for added versatility. However, the base LX and hybrid Sport trims lack this feature, resulting in slightly less cargo space and a step in the middle of the load floor when the rear seats are folded. It’s worth noting that the hybrid models do not come with a spare tire, unlike the RAV4 and Sportage hybrids. In our cargo test, the hybrid CR-V managed to fit a practical amount of luggage and additional items, although it fell slightly short compared to competitors such as the Sportage, Tucson, and RAV4.

Performance & Fuel Economy:

The non-hybrid CR-V models, including the LX, EX, and EX-L, are equipped with a 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-four engine producing 190 horsepower and 179 pound-feet of torque. Power is transmitted through a continuously variable transmission (CVT) to either the front wheels or all four wheels with optional all-wheel drive. These models achieve impressive fuel efficiency ratings of 28 mpg in the city, 34 mpg on the highway, and 30 mpg combined with front-wheel drive, and 29/32/27 with all-wheel drive.

On the other hand, the CR-V Sport, Sport-L, and Sport Touring trims feature a hybrid powertrain consisting of a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and two electric motors. The hybrid system operates predominantly as a series hybrid, with the internal combustion engine generating electricity for the electric motors. However, there are scenarios where the gas engine can directly power the wheels. The combined power output for the hybrid CR-V is 204 horsepower and 247 pound-feet of torque. Both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations are available, with the Sport Touring trim exclusively equipped with all-wheel drive. The hybrid models provide exceptional fuel economy ratings of 43 mpg in the city, 36 mpg on the highway, and 40 mpg combined with front-wheel drive, and 40/34/37 with all-wheel drive. According to the EPA’s average fuel cost estimates, choosing the hybrid option can save drivers $450 per year.

Driving Experience:

Honda has successfully recaptured its old driving dynamics prowess with the latest CR-V. The 2024 model offers a more engaging driving experience, outperforming many of its competitors in the compact SUV segment. Interestingly, the hybrid version stands out as the better performer. While the base turbo engine provides decent power, it can be slightly noisy, primarily due to the CVT’s characteristics and the somewhat unresponsive feel of the powertrain.
In contrast, the hybrid powertrain delivers not only more power but also a smooth and effortless driving experience, especially during initial acceleration, thanks to the electric motor’s immediate torque delivery. Additionally, the hybrid powertrain simulates shifts, making it feel more like a traditional vehicle compared to other hybrids on the market. In terms of refinement, the 2024 CR-V exhibits significant improvements compared to its predecessor. It offers enhanced stability, reduced body motions, and precise steering with consistent weighting. Although it may not match the sportiness of alternatives like the Mazda CX-5 or CX-50, the CR-V delivers a composed and enjoyable driving experience.

Pros: The 2024 Honda CR-V boasts a high-quality and attractive interior, an excellent hybrid powertrain, strong safety features, and a refined and responsive driving experience.

Cons: However, it does not offer plug-in hybrid or off-road models, the hybrid version lacks a spare tire, the base touchscreen is simplistic, and it has higher prices compared to some competitors.

Honda CR-V Superior Experience

In conclusion:

The 2024 Honda CR-V exceeds expectations in the compact SUV segment. Its high-quality interior, excellent hybrid powertrain, strong safety features, and refined driving dynamics make it a top choice for those seeking a reliable and versatile family vehicle. Although it lacks plug-in hybrid and off-road variants, and its pricing may be higher compared to some competitors, the overall package offered by the CR-V justifies its position at the forefront of the compact SUV market.
