A Credible STI Alternative: 2023 Subaru Prodrive WRX Prototype

In a surprising move, Subaru has decided to remove the STI from its redesigned 2022 Impreza WRX lineup. This decision has left enthusiasts disappointed, especially considering the current market’s willingness to pay high prices for performance vehicles, a credible STI alternative was needed, there may be hope for Subaru fans with the emergence of the 2023 Prodrive Subaru WRX prototype, “Prodrive upgrade package”

Prodrive, a well-known British tuning shop, has a history of collaborating with Subaru on motorsport projects. In the 90s, they were responsible for engineering and developing Subaru’s successful rally cars. This partnership led to the creation of Prodrive upgrade parts for street Subarus, although these parts have since been discontinued. However, with the introduction of the Prodrive Subaru WRX prototype, there is a possibility that Prodrive may revive their upgrade offerings.

The Prodrive Subaru WRX prototype shares many similarities with the STI. It features revised engine programming that boosts its horsepower to 300, an increase of 30 horsepower. The prototype also includes larger Prodrive-branded AP Racing brakes, with six-piston calipers in the front and four-piston calipers in the rear. The suspension has been upgraded with stiffer anti-roll bars, bushings, and Bilstein dampers with stiffer springs. Additionally, the car has a more aggressive appearance, with painted arch extensions replacing the fender cladding, a body-colored rear spoiler, and 19-inch satin grey wheels inspired by the Prodrive P25. The wheels are fitted with Bridgestone Potenza sport tires in size 255/35 R19.

Although the Prodrive Subaru WRX prototype does not have some of the features found in the WRX GT or STI, such as additional drive modes and adaptive suspension, Prodrive claims that the car is track-ready, a credible STI alternative.

During a brief test drive at Millbrook Proving Grounds in England, the prototype impressed with its handling and stability, even on a rough test track surface. However, due to the limited time with the car, it was challenging to fully assess the benefits of Prodrive’s engine tuning.

The Prodrive Subaru WRX prototype retains the WRX’s approachable and versatile nature while offering sharper handling and improved turn-in. The chassis is more willing to rotate, providing a more engaging driving experience. The Sparco seats with beefier side bolsters complement the car’s sportiness, although they may not be necessary for everyone. Prodrive designed the upgrade package to be customizable, allowing customers to choose the components that suit their preferences.

This prototype further highlights the potential of the Subaru WRX, which already boasts a capable chassis. Subaru’s willingness to collaborate with Prodrive and develop a performance-oriented variant demonstrates their commitment to catering to track enthusiasts. However, it is important to note that Prodrive has not confirmed whether they will offer this upgrade package commercially. Both Prodrive and Subaru are observing the prototype’s reception to determine its feasibility for production.

If Subaru enthusiasts want to see the Prodrive upgrade package become a reality, it is crucial for them to voice their support. The demand for these enhanced features can influence the decision-makers at Subaru and Prodrive. Ultimately, the fate of the Prodrive Subaru WRX upgrade package lies in the hands of the enthusiasts.
