First Look: 2024 BMW 5 Series Unveils Gas-Powered Performance

The release of the 2024 BMW 5 Series marks the debut of the first gasoline-powered version of this midsize luxury sedan. The 2024 530i xDrive features a 2.0 liter turbo four cylinder engine with mild hybrid technology.

BMW has made improvements to the intake ducts, combustion chambers, ignition system, fuel injection, camshaft control, and exhaust gas routing, resulting in an increase of 7 horsepower and 38 pound-feet of torque compared to the outgoing 530i.
The 530i now boasts 255 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Additionally, fuel economy has improved, with both drive versions achieving 27 miles per gallon city, 35 mpg highway, and 30 mpg combined.

When it comes to acceleration, the 530i offers a powerful and smooth ride. Pairing the engine with rear wheel drive, BMW claims a 0-100-mph time of 5.9 seconds.
The xDrive models however, a shade faster in just 5.8 seconds, thanks to the extra traction off the line.

The 530i delivers its powerful performance via an eight-speed auto transmission with smooth and speedy shifts. While the engine takes on a muted gruff and growly theme through the abundance of sound deadening, the transmission offers a seamless and enjoyable driving experience.

Same Same but Different:

Visually, the 530i and the EV version share nearly identical interiors, making it difficult to tell them apart from the outside. The gas-powered 5 Series stands out with a traditional kidney grille with active flaps for cooling, providing a clear distinction from the EV.

When it comes to handling, the 530i showcases impressive agility and stability. The gas-powered 5 Series enjoys the same increase to wheelbase and track as the EV, though each model gets unique chassis components and control systems due to the wide variance of vehicle weights. Despite the weight difference, the 530i handles winding roads with ease and agility.

The M Sport Suspension offered in the 530i provides a comfortable and smooth ride, effectively filtering out road imperfections without causing jostling in the cabin. Overall, the 530i offers a capable and enjoyable driving experience, making it an excellent daily driver.

Inside Quality Continues:

In terms of the interior, the 530i offers a high-quality and tech-forward experience. The improved iDrive 8.5 software and the addition of convenient features such as heated/ventilated seats, heated steering wheel, and quick toggles make switching between tasks more accessible. The responsive and efficient system, along with the ventilated wireless phone charging pad, enhance the overall comfort and convenience of the interior.

The 530i also boasts practical advantages, such as a larger trunk and a longer range on a full tank compared to the EV version. Additionally, the starting price of the 530i is lower than that of the EV, making it a compelling option for those in the market for a midsize luxury sedan.

In conclusion, the 2024 BMW 530i xDrive is a strong contender in the midsize luxury sedan segment, offering a powerful performance, comfortable interior, and practical advantages. While the EV variant may have its unique appeal, the 530i makes a compelling case for itself as a reliable and enjoyable daily driver. With its impressive features and capabilities, the 530i is a worthy addition to the lineup of the new 5 Series.
