General Motors to supply Formula 1 engines from 2028

General Motors supply Formula 1 engines from 2028. This press release was recently officially announced regarding its registration as a Formula 1 power unit supplier with the FIA. It has also expressed its commitment to supply an engine for the Andretti F1 entry.

Just the previous month, Andretti successfully passed the initial hurdle to become an official Formula 1 team as the FIA approved its bid. However, the team still needs to reach an agreement with Formula 1 Management and commercial rights holder, Liberty Media. As reported earlier, Andretti’s bid is facing opposition from other teams on the grid, making the path forward a challenging one to navigate.

Cadillac Announcements:

With regards to Cadillac’s announcement today, GM has disclosed that it has already initiated the development and testing of prototype technology for the Formula 1 power unit. GM aims to leverage this work to bring improvements to road cars in areas such as electrification, hybrid technology, sustainable fuels, high-efficiency internal combustion engines, advanced controls, and software systems.

GM President Mark Reuss expressed his enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “We are thrilled that General Motors will supply Formula 1 engines to Andretti Cadillac F1 entry. With our deep engineering and racing expertise, we’re confident we’ll develop a successful power unit for the series and position Andretti Cadillac as a true works team. We will run with the very best, at the highest levels, with passion and integrity that will help elevate the sport for race fans around the world.”

It’s all in the *

However, there is an asterisk to be applied to this announcement because GM has mentioned that its power unit will be ready in 2028, while Andretti aims to begin racing in Formula 1 sooner than that – possibly as early as 2025. It is unclear who would supply engines to the Andretti team before GM and Cadillac become involved. There would be a gap between Andretti’s entry and the availability of a GM power unit. New engine regulations will be in effect for the 2026 season, providing other teams with a head start on developing their engines over several race seasons before Cadillac enters the grid.
