Honda Prelude Coupe Concept: The Icon Makes a Comeback

Honda revealed its plans last year to introduce two battery powered sports models. However, to everyone’s surprise, the latest Prelude Coupe Concept showcased a hybrid powertrain during its debut this week.

Honda announced on Wednesday that it is actively developing the Prelude concept, which made an appearance at the 2023 Tokyo Auto Show, for future production. Earlier this year, Honda took steps to renew the trademark for Prelude.

Prelude was first launched in Japan in 1978 as a stylish front wheel drive coupe that incorporated reliable mechanical components shared with other popular models.
After five generations of production, the Prelude’s journey came to an end in 2002.

In Tokyo the showcased Prelude Coupe was a concept, it had a production ready appearance. However, contrary to expectations of it being an electric vehicle (EV) in production, A Honda spokesperson confirmed that the concept car features a hybrid drivetrain.

This situation raises intriguing questions about the future of the concept itself, including the possibility of it not offering an EV drivetrain in the production version, as well as the fate of the two promised electric sports cars.

The Pain in the Split:

There were speculations that Honda’s EV sports car might share some components with other upcoming Honda EVs. However, due to recent developments between Honda and General Motors (GM), it is unlikely that Honda will utilize the Ultium platform and battery technology from GM, which is being used for the 2024 Prologue and 2024 Acura ZDX crossovers.

Previously, Honda was collaborating with GM on a range of affordable EVs. However, this joint effort has now been canceled. The initial model based on this collaborative platform was scheduled for release in 2027.

Going Your Own Way:

Instead, Honda has prioritized the development of its own EV platform for medium and large-size models. The first model from this platform expected to be a crossover arriving in 2025. Additionally, Honda is working with Sony on a new line of small electric cars under the Afeela brand.

By 2030, Honda aims to have at least 30 EVs available worldwide. One of these models is anticipated to be the second sports car, speculated to be a new NSX supercar.

As of now, the future appears bright for the hybrid Prelude Coupe Concept. However, it remains uncertain for the two promised battery electric Honda sports cars.
