Lamborghini Countach from ‘Wolf of Wall Street’ to be Auctioned

In a fascinating turn of events, the Lamborghini Countach from ‘Wolf of Wall Street has emerged. This car was features in the Martin Scorsese movie.  RM Sotheby’s had previously announced that it would auction a white 1989 Lamborghini Countach 25th Anniversary in New York in December, which was one of two cars featured in the film. The other car, also a Bianco Polo 25th Anniversary Countach, was severely damaged during filming. Its location and condition had been a mystery until Bonhams recently revealed that it would auction the car this month in Abu Dhabi. The car will be auctioned in the exact condition it was in when it was taken off the set.

Bonhams has labeled its offering the “Hero Car”. They are making a big deal about it having appeared on screen for “approximately 3 minutes and 11 seconds” alongside Leonardo DiCaprio. They compare this to the RM Sotheby’s car, which was on screen for approximately 16 seconds, with some of the footage featuring a stunt driver instead of DiCaprio. Essentially, the auction houses are debating whether a famous crashed Countach could be worth as much, if not more, than a famous uncrashed Countach, akin to the value of patina and original condition versus a restored vehicle.

Two Auctions One Price:

Both auction houses have similar pre-sale estimates, ranging from $1.5M to $2M. However, Bonhams is sweetening the deal by including a certificate of authenticity, DiCaprio’s costume from the film, a director’s chair and a clapboard signed by Martin Scorsese, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Margot Robbie, two film crew hoodies, and two DVDs of the film. It’s worth noting that the idea of spending $2 million on a wrecked Lamborghini and having to declare two DVDs at customs on the way home is quite peculiar.

But it’s not just the association with the film that justifies these estimates. In the real story, Jordan Belfort claimed to have been driving a Mercedes. However, Scorsese decided to raise the stakes by using a Lamborghini instead. The director initially used a replica, but it didn’t have the same impact as the genuine car. So Scorsese purchased the Silver Anniversary editions of the Lamborghini Countach. There are only 23 reported to have made it to America out of the 658 units sold worldwide. According to Hagerty, a Countach in good condition is valued at $440,000.

Place Your Bets:

Bonhams’ auction, titled “On the Grid: The Abu Dhabi Auction,” will take place on November 25. Two weeks later, RM Sotheby’s will hold its New York auction. With two Lamborghini Countach from ‘Wolf of Wall Street’ going up for auction, It wouldn’t be surprising if there is a bidder who tries to win both cars. That’s certainly what a wolf would do.
