Mercedes G Wagon Production Set to Cease in Q1 2024

Big developments in the Mercedes-Benz G-Class lineup, citing a report from Business Insider Germany. According to the German publication, a letter was sent from Mercedes’ sales organization to dealers in Germany on September 14. The letter stating that the Mercedes G Wagon Production will end in the first quarter of 2024.
Furthermore, The letter revealed a facelifted model, which will be the first electrified G-Class of its kind, to be introduced next year. This alongside the debut of the electric version known as the EQG.

The year 2024 is significant as it marks the 45th anniversary of the G-Class being available to customers. The truck is currently produced by subcontractor Magna-Steyr in Graz, Austria, the same city where the G-Class was first developed in 1972.

Change is Inevitable

Although the current W463 G has only been on the market since 2018, Mercedes has big plans for its upcoming milestone. Many of the changes planned for the facelifted model are a result of the development of the EQG. One area of focus has been on improving the aerodynamics of the vehicle. Through fine-tuning and lessons learned from the EQG, the combustion engine G-Class will also benefit from significant aerodynamic improvements. All in the vision to a notable reduction in fuel consumption.

The goal of the updates is to make the G-Class resemble the EQG while still maintaining its identity. But now more of a versatile vehicle that can be powered by petrol, diesel, or electric engines. Dr. Schiller emphasized that the EQG is not simply an electric car; rather, it is still a G-Class at its core.

Spy shots have confirmed that the EQG will retain the iconic G silhouette. Distinctive circular LED daytime running lights accompanying rectangular projector headlights. Despite the camouflage, it is difficult to discern specific bodywork changes. Subtle alterations to the intakes and grille mesh have been identified.

Prototypes have been spotted with a skid plate panel below the rear bumper. This potentially indicating different rear axle configurations for various powertrains in the all-electric version. Additionally, it is rumored that the EQG will utilize silicon anode chemistry in its battery pack, resulting in significant range improvements.

After the current Mercedes G Wagon Production ceases in Q1 2024, with the release of a new model, Mercedes has plans to introduce a smaller G-shaped vehicle called the GLG in 2026.
