Review: The 2023 Maxus MIFA 9 – A Very Affordable Electric MPV

Chinese automaker Maxus has entered the luxury MPV market with an electric vehicle. The 2023 Maxus MIFA 9 MPV competes with the higher-priced Mercedes EQV and the more basic Opel Zafira-e, both of which have a commercial vehicle background. Despite being a niche product, Maxus has pulled out all the stops to create a compelling alternative to traditional ICE luxury MPVs.

In terms of looks, the Maxus MPV has a premium appearance with a slab-sided design that provides ample space in the cabin. The front features a lightbar and integrated main light clusters, while the side profile showcases contrasting chrome trim panels. The rear end boasts a bold taillight design with a lightbar running the width of the vehicle and a faux diffuser. Overall, the design reflects its high price tag.

Luxurious Interior:

Moving to the interior, the build quality is generally good, although some units may have occasional rattles or squeaks. With a height of nearly 1.9 meters, there is no shortage of headroom, and finding a comfortable seating position is easy. The second row of seats is designed with luxury in mind, featuring ventilated captain’s chairs with built-in leg rests. Although the seats are not made of real leather, they still deliver a high level of comfort.

While the cabin is luxurious, there are some areas for improvement. The infotainment screen could be more intuitive to use, and the speakers could provide better sound quality. Additionally, the lack of native Android Auto functionality is a drawback. However, these issues can be resolved with external solutions such as a phone mount.

Driving Experience:

the Maxus MPV impresses with its braking capabilities. The combination of strong regenerative braking and friction brakes provides confident stopping power. The car handles most road imperfections well, but smaller bumps may result in minor oscillations. Noise insulation on the roof panel could have been better, as the sound of rain hitting the roof is more noticeable than expected.

Overall, the Maxus MPV delivers a smooth and comfortable driving experience. The electric motor provides torque at any road speed, and the steering is easy to use. Despite its length, the vehicle has a surprisingly good turning radius.

Considering all factors, the Maxus MPV is a commendable first attempt that caters to a wide range of users. With a real-world range of over 400 kilometers, excellent visibility, and decent ride quality, it offers great value for money in the premium MPV market. However, potential buyers should keep in mind the large dimensions of the vehicle, which may make it challenging to navigate older car parks and estates with silver zones.

In conclusion, the 2023 Maxus MIFA 9 MPV is a compelling option for those in the market for a luxury electric MPV. It offers a unique combination of style, comfort, and range at a relatively affordable price compared to its competitors.
