Rock Climbing in the new 2024 Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison

In Johnson Valley, California, a daring adventure awaits in the new 2024 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison. A very challenging narrow gully filled with jagged rocks, we can’t help but question the sanity of attempting to navigate this vehicle through dangerous terrain.

Rock crawling is not normally associated with the ZR2, It’s more known for its performance in desert trips and its Baja drive mode. Equipped with Multimatic DSSV spool-valve dampers, the Colorado ZR2 Bison offers a smooth and comfortable ride on dirt and sandy roads. The addition of Jounce Control Dampers provides extra cushioning for large impacts, reminiscent of the iconic “Dukes of Hazzard” jumps.

The Bison edition is better equipped for off roading adventures compared to the standard ZR2. Therefore, the Bison features heavy duty steel bumpers, fender flares, and protective skid plates.

It’s all about challenging yourself

Driving the Colorado ZR2 Bison through the challenging gully, it’s best to engage the power locking front and rear differentials, select 4Lo, and activate Terrain mode. The massive 35 inch mud terrain tires provide excellent traction, but their size limits rear visibility. Thankfully, the Bison offers a variety of cameras, including a forward camera for situations when a spotter is not available.

Navigating this challenging terrain requires the guidance of a spotter, the rear quarter panel’s protective trim endures a hit against a rock. However, the sturdy construction minimizes damage, and the Bison’s overall ground clearance surpasses that of its competitors in the midsize truck segment.

Powering the Bison is a 2.7 liter inline four cylinder, delivering 310 hp through an eight speed auto gearbox. Weight has increased by 150kg which affects performance slightly. However, it remains a capable and powerful off road vehicle, even with the additional weight.

Visually, the Bison looks different with AEV bumpers, body protection, and Bison badges. Inside features all weather floor mats, AEV headrest logos, complementing the ZR2’s upscale interior with its soft materials.

Compared to other off road vehicles

Such as the Ford Bronco Wildtrak or Badlands with the Sasquatch package, the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon X, or the Jeep Gladiator Mojave, the Bison offers unique features like the Multimatic dampers.

Ultimately, the decision to choose the ZR2 Colorado Bison over the standard ZR2 comes down to personal preference. The Bison’s enhanced capabilities and comfort, along with its exclusive design, make it a worthy investment.
In conclusion, the Bison is a head turning off road truck that commands attention, setting it apart from its counterparts.
