Tesla Model S and Bugatti Drag Race: Rather Close Results

When comparing the Tesla and the Bugatti, both cars offer tremendous power and speed. However, the key difference is the fuel source: gas for the Bugatti and electricity for the Tesla.

  • Tesla Model S and A Bugatti Chiron drag race.
  • Although the Bugatti emerged as the winner, the races were surprisingly close considering the significant cost difference between the two cars.
  • The Tesla Model S used in the video has a price tag of approximately $110,000, while the Bugatti Chiron can cost $4 million and more.

An interesting aspect of the growing popularity of electric vehicles is the democratization of high performance capabilities.

It’s all in the Torque

Electric motors can generate immense power at any speed, allowing for previously exclusive levels of speed and acceleration found only in highly coveted sports cars like Porsches, Ferraris, and Lamborghinis. Now, these attributes are accessible in electric vehicles produced by Tesla, Kia, BMW, and others.

This unique trend was recently showcased in a YouTube video by Carwow, an online automotive marketplace. The channel organized a race between the sportiest Tesla available, the four-door Model S Plaid with the optional Track Package, and the Bugatti Chiron Super Sport, a multimillion-dollar supercar renowned for its exceptional performance.

And the Winner is?

As anticipated, the Bugatti emerged as the winner. However, the results were surprisingly close, given that the Model S is priced at a little over $100,000. With the Chiron Super Sport costing at least $4 million when purchased new.

Before delving into the video, let’s briefly examine our contenders: the Model S Plaid features an impressive 1,020 horsepower from two motors, each powering a separate axle.

On the other hand, the Chiron boasts a 16-cylinder, quad-turbocharged engine that produces a staggering 1,600 horsepower. A modified version of the Chiron, known as the Super Sport 300+, holds the title of the world’s fastest production car. This model has achieved a top speed of 305 mph.

In the first test, a quarter-mile drag race, the Tesla initially took the lead, thanks to its instantly available torque. However, as the race progressed and the Tesla struggled at higher speeds, the Bugatti accelerated ahead. Ultimately, both cars finished the race in 9.6 seconds, with the Bugatti barely edging out the Tesla.

The second head-to-head competition, a half mile race starting at 50 mph, followed a similar pattern. Initially, the Tesla pulled away faster, but as the speeds increased, it couldn’t match the huge power of the Bugatti. The Chiron easily accelerated from 120 mph to 210 mph, leaving the Tesla in its wake.

It’s remarkable that this even qualifies as a competition. Watch the full Tesla Model S and Bugatti Drag Race video below:
