Ultimate Protection Vehicle for Cambodia: Armored BMW X5

BMW has recently introduced a new version of the armored 7 Series that is specifically designed for individuals who are at risk. While this car is capable of withstanding armor-piercing bullets, it is not suitable for off-road situations. This is where the armored X5 Protection model comes into play as the ultimate protection vehicle for Cambodia.

The upgraded X5 Protection model was unveiled at the 2023 Munich auto show and offers a VR6 protection rating. This means that it can effectively protect its occupants from bullets fired by an AK-47 assault rifle. Unlike other vehicles where protective features are added as an afterthought, BMW strategically incorporated the armor into the design of the current-generation X5. As a result, the bulletproof X5 closely resembles the regular-production model from an external perspective.

There is more under the skin:

However, there is more than meets the eye with this vehicle. BMW has added sections of high strength steel to various parts of the car, including the doors, side frame, roof, and bulkhead. Additionally, bulletproof glass, an armored partition between the trunk and the passenger compartment, and an aluminum splinter guard have been implemented. For those seeking even greater protection, extended underbody armor and additional armored panels on the roof are available at an extra cost.

Contrary to popular belief, a well-aimed shot cannot easily pierce the fuel tank and abruptly end a high-speed chase. The X5’s fuel tank automatically seals itself in the event of a puncture to prevent fuel loss. BMW engineers have also made several chassis modifications to compensate for the added weight of the armor.

Protected Comfort:

In terms of the interior, the X5 Protection offers the same spaciousness and luxury as the non-armored version. However, it only comes with four seats and the driver is faced with the BMW Curved Display setup, consisting of a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch display for the iDrive 8.5 infotainment system. Standard features include soft-close doors, leather upholstery, heated front sport seats, ambient lighting, and a four-zone automatic climate control system. The goal is to ensure that occupants do not feel as though they are in a military tank. Optional features range from flag poles to massaging front seats.

Powering the X5 Protection is a twin-turbocharged, 4.4-liter V8 engine coupled with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. This combination generates an impressive 530 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque. Working with an eight speed auto, the X5 Protection can accelerate from zero to 62 mph in just 5.9 seconds.

The updated BMW X5 Protection is slated to commence production in February 2024. Pricing wasn’t disclosed, it is likely the customer’s primary concern is the level of protection rather than the cost. Furthermore, BMW proudly claims that the X5 Protection is the best-selling model in its relatively small segment.
