Updated Subaru Solterra Revealed at Japan Mobility Show

An updated Subaru Solterra was revealed at the Japan Mobility Show. This can provide a glimpse of potential changes that could be implemented once the crossover is released in Japan. These updates as a result of customer feedback and aim to improve the overall driving experience of the electric crossover.

One notable improvement is the redesigned “squircle” steering wheel. The previous model featured a thick, round wheel that could obstruct the view of the digital gauge cluster, located further back on the instrument panel. This design inconvenience prompted Subaru to introduce a flat top wheel, addressing the issue and improving visibility for drivers.

Improved Charging AC:DC

Additionally, Subaru has introduced new programming to optimize battery preparation when charging the Solterra in cold weather conditions. Subaru states with a 90 kW charger when the low power light is on to reaching 80% charge can be reduced by up to 30%.
Although there isn’t a benchmark for comparison, this improvement is significant. Under ideal conditions with a 100 kW DC fast charger, an 80% charge is reached in just 56 minutes.

Subaru has also added more charging information to the display, although specific details were not provided in the announcement. This change ensures drivers have a comprehensive overview of their charging progress and status.

In terms of extending the range, Subaru’s engineers made adjustments to the Solterra’s programming. The vehicle is now programmed to default to Eco mode, which means Eco mode range estimates will be the initial setting when powering on the Solterra. This change is particularly relevant in countries where vehicle statistics are measured based on powertrain startup settings. Furthermore, the Solterra’s HVAC system now includes a humidity sensor, and the heating system prioritizes the use of heated seats and a heated steering wheel to warm occupants, thereby reducing the reliance on energy consuming methods to sustain cabin temperature.

Advanced Safety Features:

Moreover, Subaru has expanded its EyeSight safety suite to offer Advanced Drive Congestion Assistance, Front Cross Traffic Alert with an anti collision function, Lane Change Assist, and automatic hazard flashing during emergency stops. These additions significantly providie drivers with a higher level of confidence on the road.

Beyond the official press release, rumors are circulating of a potential Solterra STI variation next summer. Subaru intends to produce the Solterra STI concept showcased at the 2022 Tokyo Motor Show. The concept model boasted various sporty visual enhancements such as a front splitter, rocker panel extensions, rear bumper winglets, and a roof mounted spoiler. These additions only contribute to the car’s looks rather than performance. However, it aligns with Subaru’s history of offering appearance packages for their STI-badged vehicles.

Additionally, Subaru has trademarked “STe” in Germany, possibly indicating potential future electric performance models from the brand.

Even though the Subaru Solterra was revealed, no official announcement of the forthcoming updates. It’s expected these announcements to be made shortly, providing further insight into the development of the electric crossover.
