VW ID. GTI Concept: Production underway for an Electric Hot Hatch

The Munich Motor Show is currently featuring an array of electric hot hatch vehicles, which is quite exciting. This includes the recent introduction of two new electric Minis and now the unveiling of the VW ID. GTI concept. The concept car is based on the previously revealed ID. 2all concept, but with a much sportier appearance. The best news is that the ID. GTI Concept is already planned for production.

The connection between the ID. 2all and the ID. GTI is evident, as they share basic body and lighting designs. However, the GTI Concept introduces several changes to enhance its sporty look. It includes black trim around the headlights with the iconic GTI red highlight, along with the incorporation of the GTI logo. The lower grille features a larger opening, honeycomb mesh, and red tow points. Vertical LED fog lights are placed on each end, accompanied by a deeper front lip spoiler. Black fender flares, sculpted side skirts, and an aggressive rear diffuser further contribute to the car’s dynamic appearance. Additionally, the ID. GTI Concept boasts striped graphics along the sides and rear hatch, a black spoiler on the hatch, and dark tinted taillights. The car sits on sizable 20-inch wheels.

Is Bigger Always Better

Compared to the current gas-powered Golf GTI, the ID. GTI is smaller in most dimensions. It shares a similar overall length of 160.4 inches and a wheelbase of 100.7 with the VW Polo GTI sold in Europe and other markets. However, it is actually 1.4 inches taller than the Golf-based GTI sold in the United States. The cargo space of the ID. GTI is slightly smaller than that of the Golf GTI, offering 17.3 cubic feet compared to 19.9. However, it compensates with a slightly larger overall space of 47 cubic feet when the back seat is folded, possibly due to its increased height.

The interior design of the VW ID. GTI concept will closely resemble the ID. 2all concept. However, it will feature tartan sport seats with a GTI heart logo on the driver’s seat and a golf-ball-inspired drive mode selector (as the actual shifter is located on the steering column, following the convention of other electric VW models). The car is equipped with a sportier steering wheel that includes an illuminated 12 o’clock mark. Behind the wheel, there is a 10.9-inch instrument cluster that allows for customization, with options to display classic GTI instrument clusters such as the Fox Body cluster mode found in the new Mustang. VW also highlights its augmented reality windshield-sized head-up display, although it remains uncertain if this feature will make it to the production model.

Top Secret Details to be Revealed

Unfortunately, VW did not reveal much information about the powertrain. It can be expected that the ID. GTI will be front-wheel drive like the 2all and previous GTIs. It will undoubtedly be more powerful than the 2all, but specific performance figures were not disclosed. The batteries will be placed in the vehicle’s floor, although their capacity was not specified. However, VW did mention that the GTI will be equipped with a limited-slip differential. Additionally, the ID. GTI will offer multiple simulated shift patterns and sounds to imitate the experience of driving vintage GTIs. This feature brings to mind the simulated shifting feature of the upcoming Hyundai Ioniq 5 N.

No information regarding the availability of the ID. GTI was provided, but it has been confirmed that the car will enter production. Whether it will be available in the United States remains unknown. We hope that the VW ID. GTI concept will be reasonably priced, considering that the ID. 2all is expected to have a starting price below $30,000. While the GTI variant will likely be more expensive, a lower starting point should prevent it from becoming excessively costly.
