Who needs German when you have this? A 2023 Genesis GV70

The 2023 Genesis GV70 is a new addition to the highly competitive midsize luxury SUV segment. Although it debuted in 2022, not much has changed for the 2023 model year. This SUV offers a range of powerful turbocharged engines and even an all-electric option. Its performance is impressive, and its interior is luxurious and well-designed. The tech features in the GV70 are not only clever but also easy to use, setting it apart from its German competitors.

While the GV70 may not have the same brand recognition as BMW or Mercedes, Genesis is making a statement by producing cars that match their luxury value. If you haven’t heard of the Genesis GV70, don’t overlook it. Taking this SUV for a test drive might convince you that it’s a smarter choice for a feature-rich and premium crossover experience.

For the 2023 model year, there are only a few changes compared to the previous year. The trims with “Sport” in their name now have black rear brake calipers to match the front ones, and traditional buttons replace the touch-sensitive controls on the steering wheel. The 2.5T AWD models also have some changes based on trim level, such as Monobloc front brakes, a heated steering wheel, the Lexicon premium audio system, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and three-zone climate control. Additionally, some exterior paint colors have been tweaked.

The interior of the 2023 Genesis GV70 is a true delight. The Sport Advanced package provides a luxurious feel with Nappa leather seating, soft leatherette on the upper dash and door panels, and a suede headliner. The buttons move smoothly, and the touch-sensitive controls for climate control functions have a modern and decluttered look. However, the placement of the infotainment system control knob and the gear selection knob next to each other can be confusing and lead to accidental changes. The 14.5-inch widescreen infotainment display is mounted in a way that prioritizes visibility, and the knob interface is user-friendly. The GV70 offers a more attractive and intuitive system compared to its German competitors.

In terms of interior space, the GV70 is similar to other rear-drive-based compact SUVs. The backseat space can be tight with a tall driver up front, and families with rear-facing car seats may find other SUVs like the Volvo XC60 or Acura RDX more suitable. However, the seats themselves are comfortable, with ample recline and headroom. The cargo area behind the second row offers 28.9 cubic feet of space, which is enough for standard luggage and more. It has more space than the Audi Q5 and previous-generation Mercedes GLC, comparable to the Alfa Romeo Stelvio, and slightly less than the Acura RDX.

The 2023 Genesis GV70 comes with two engine options. The standard engine is a 2.5-liter turbocharged inline-four that produces 300 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque. All-wheel drive is standard, along with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Fuel efficiency for the 2.5T engine is rated at 22 mpg city, 28 mpg highway, and 24 mpg combined. The Sport Prestige trim level, with its larger 21-inch wheels, has slightly lower fuel efficiency. The upgrade engine is a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 that generates 375 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque. Its fuel efficiency is rated at 19 mpg city, 24 mpg highway, and 21 mpg combined.

The driving experience of the GV70 is more similar to its big brother, the GV80, than to the sporty G70 sedan. It feels heavy, especially with body roll even in the firmest suspension mode. The steering in Sport mode may disappoint some drivers as it adds unnecessary effort without enhancing the sporty feel. However, the ride quality is excellent, surpassing German luxury models due to its adaptive suspension that adjusts based on road conditions. The 3.5-liter V6 engine delivers smooth and powerful performance, similar to more expensive luxury vehicles like the GV80. The Sport Prestige package, with its larger wheels, may result in a slightly harsher ride on rough pavement.
