Who Needs Rules: Introducing the Porsche 911 GT3 R Rennsport


The Rennsport Reunion, now in its seventh edition, has taken place at the Laguna Seca race track in Monterey, California.
Porsche chose this international gathering of all things Porsche, as the perfect occasion to unveil a new race car – the Porsche 911 GT3 R rennsport.

This limited-production GT3 R based racer is specifically designed to deliver maximum performance on the track.
It’s a shame we don’t have any racetrack in Cambodia, the likelihood of us seeing one is very remote.

What Rulebook?

What sets the Rennsport special edition apart is that it does not conform to typical racing series regulations. While the regular 911 GT3 R is crafted with FIA GT3 competition rules in mind, Porsche disregarded these guidelines when engineering the GT3 R Rennsport, aiming to provide the 77 fortunate owners with unrivaled performance.
Visually, this means that almost the entire exterior has been altered from the base GT3 R, with only the hood and roof retaining their original design. As a result, Porsche’s modifications have enhanced the car’s aerodynamic efficiency and increased its downforce.

For instance, Porsche replaced the conventional mirrors with cameras that transmit video feeds to monitors inside the cabin. The introduction of the imposing new wing necessitated additional vertical supports to cope with the heightened levels of downforce, and the wide open rear fascia serves a dual purpose – reducing weight and providing a captivating view of the inner workings of the car.

Power and Transmission

Not being bound by powertrain regulations gives the 4.2-liter flat-six engine the freedom to generate even more power. Porsche has boosted the output from 557 horses to 611 horsepower in the Rennsport. This version of the engine boasts specially-designed pistons and camshafts, and it is optimized to run on bio-ethanol fuels. However, conventional fuel can also be used without any issues. The exhaust system is entirely new and muffler-free, resulting in an “authentic and extremely emotional engine sound,” according to Porsche. However, two additional exhaust systems are available to adhere to noise restrictions on certain tracks.

The sequential six speed gearbox remains mostly unchanged, although Porsche has raised the sixth gear to increase top speed by 12 mph. The chassis remains the same, with a double-wishbone front and multi-link rear suspension equipped with KW racing shock absorbers. However, a new Michelin tire compound has been developed exclusively for this car. These tires offer improved warm-up and drivability characteristics compared to the GT3 R.

Other minor changes include brake pads with titanium backing plates, a lighter fuel tank, and the removal of the A/C system.
While the loss of A/C may be missed by the ultra-rich collectors who purchase for actual use. Porsche emphasizes that weight reduction is the primary focus, targeting a curb weight of 1245kg.

Price Tag:

Not surprisingly, It takes considerable wealth to buy a GT3 R Rennsport, the base price starts at $1,046,000, excluding options and transport fees.
The lucky 77 buyers will have the privilege of choosing from seven different exterior colors and three distinct paintwork designs.

Lastly, For a race car, this level of customization is quite significant. Some of the seven paint options include Ruby Stay, Signal Orange, and Agate Gray Metallic. The three available paintwork designs are “Rennsport Reunion Design,” “Flacht Design,” and “Speed Icon Design.”
