The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser has finally been revealed, bringing back the iconic Land Cruiser nameplate after a brief hiatus. Toyota has made significant changes to the 2024 model, making it smaller, less expensive, hybrid-only, and with a much more rugged appearance.
The design of the 2024 model is a big departure from the previous Land Cruiser, taking inspiration from its earlier history. The new Land Cruiser has a squared-off body and upright stance, giving it a classic off-roader look. Toyota has reduced the width of the new model by 4.4 inches and made it 1.2 inches shorter overall to enhance its agility off-road. This makes the vehicle appear dramatically smaller in person. Additionally, there are two headlight designs, with one being a rectangular look reminiscent of the FJ62, and the other trims have round headlights.
Hybrid Only Powertrain:
The previous generation of the Land Cruiser had a big, naturally-aspirated V8 engine as its only option. However, Toyota has decided to make the i-Force Max hybrid powertrain the only available form of motivation for the new Land Cruiser. The hybrid powertrain consists of a 2.4 liter turbo four cylinder engine and a 48 hp electric motor integrated with the eight speed auto transmission, which is also used on the new Tacoma. The total system output is 326 hp. While the new model has a 55 hp deficit compared to the previous model, it has gained 64 pound-feet of torque. Toyota is using a 1.87 kWh nickel-metal-hydride battery pack to power the electric motor, but fuel economy estimates are yet to be revealed.
Similar to other Toyota trucks and Lexus SUVs, the Land Cruiser is built on Toyota’s TNGA-F body-on-frame platform. It features a new double-wishbone front suspension design and a multi-link rear suspension paired with coil springs. Every Land Cruiser comes with a full-time four-wheel-drive system that features a center-locking differential and an electronically-controlled transfer case with both a high and low range. Additionally, it has an electronic locking rear differential to split power 50/50 to the rear wheels when necessary. Ground clearance is 8.7 inches, and it offers approach, break-over, and departure angles of 31 degrees, 25 degrees, and 22 degrees respectively. The 1958 grade has a slightly degraded approach angle of 30 degrees due to its different wheel and tire package.
Options Packs Galore:
The Land Cruiser is well equipped for off road use, with optional rock rails and a full battery of high strength steel skid plates. All grades come with standard front tow/recovery hooks.
The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser is available in three grades named Land Cruiser 1958, Land Cruiser, and Land Cruiser First Edition. The Land Cruiser 1958 model comes well equipped with 18-inch alloy wheels, LED fog lamps, heated seats, heated steering wheel, a Crawl Control function, and Downhill Assist Control. Stepping up to the “Land Cruiser” grade adds additional features such as the front stabilizer bar disconnect, Multi-Terrain Select, Multi-Terrain Monitor, and Rigid fog lights. The First Edition model adds features such as a front skid plate, rock rails, and leather seats.
Double Screen Delight:
Two different screen setups are available in the interior of the Land Cruiser, with the 1958 model having an eight-inch touchscreen and the other two having a 12.3-inch touchscreen. Both come with wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto as standard, and Toyota says they can receive over-the-air updates. Standard safety features include Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 system, which includes adaptive cruise control, lane-tracing assist, auto high-beams, blind-spot monitoring, and more.
There is a lot of available tech, and even if you don’t get the fully-loaded First Edition, a Premium Package is still available. With a limited production of 5,000 units for the First Edition model, and greater production volume for the other trims.
This new model is very Defender looking so will certainly be a winning formula.
