2024 Toyota Tacoma Review: Living Up to the Hype

The 2024 Toyota Tacoma is making headlines as it is the first completely new Tacoma in over 15 years. The 2016 update was more of a heavy refresh, so this new model is a big deal for Toyota. It’s currently the top selling model in its segment, but the competition is fierce, with every truck manufacturer introducing new, refreshed, or upcoming models. Despite this, we rank all these competitors higher than the current Tacoma. Fortunately, the new Tacoma is making a strong comeback, and it could even become a segment leader.

The first Tacomas to hit the market will be equipped with the new 2.4 liter turbo four cylinder engine. This new exciting model is expected in dealerships early next year. The higher performance hybrids won’t arrive until early next year, including the hybrid only TRD Pro and Trailhunter models. The hybrid could potentially make the new Tacoma be the clear pick for all midsize truck needs, but we won’t know for sure until they are available.

Now, let’s explore what makes the new Tacoma stand out. The truck is built on a version of the TNGA-F platform shared with other Toyota models. This new platform brings significant upgrades, such as a fully boxed frame from front to back – a significant improvement over the previous version. The suspension has been modernized for select versions of the truck, with coil springs on crew cab models and leaf springs on extended cab versions. Additionally, all trim levels now feature disc brakes on all corners.

When it comes to powertrains, there are two versions of the 2.4 liter turbo four. The base 2.4 liter engine produces reasonable 228 hp. While an upgraded version delivers either 270 or 278 hp depending on the transmission you choose. The base engine is paired with an eight speed auto, while the higher output version is available with a six speed manual.

These mechanical upgrades result in a significant improvement in the Tacoma’s driving experience. The turbocharged engine provides increased torque at low RPM, allowing for better acceleration with less effort. The auto transmission, in particular, shifts more smoothly and promptly than before and contributes to a better driving experience. However, there is some mechanical noise from under the hood, which is more noticeable than some of its competitors.

The best part of the 2024 Tacoma is its improved ride and handling. The chassis and body feel extremely stiff, resulting in a lack of wiggling and shuddering common in body-on-frame vehicles. The suspension is tuned on the softer side, providing a smooth ride over mild bumps. The coil springs equipped crew cab models and leaf springs equipped extended cabs have minimal differences in terms of ride and handling. However, the various trims offer unique tuning and shock absorbers that make a difference in the driving feeling and experience.

Off-road lovers will be more than pleased with the TRD Off-Road trim. This option comes with features like revised CRAWL Control off road cruise control system, electronic disconnecting front anti roll bar, optional electronic locking rear differential, and surround view cameras. It also has other upgrades such as Bilstein shocks, larger tires, multiple terrain modes, and skid plates. For those needing a budget friendly option, the PreRunner model is available with rear wheel drive and off road features.

In conclusion, the 2024 Toyota Tacoma has marked a significant improvement over its predecessors. The key updates are in terms of powertrain, driving experience, and off road capability. With various upgrades and enhancements, it is poised to become a leader in the highly competitive midsize truck segment. As we anticipate the arrival of the hybrid models, the new Tacoma has already set a high standard for its competitors.

This new model will be a great addition to the pick up options in Cambodia. You can get in touch with Toyota Cambodia for more information.
